Work at Apex
A small team on consequential work. There is no ladder to climb and no department to hide in, which suits some people and not others.
Company culture
Small team, real problems
Payments is an unusually consequential place to work. When an account is placed badly a business loses the ability to take money. When a dispute is answered badly a merchant loses money they had already earned. The work is detailed and it matters, which is a rarer combination than it sounds.
Apex works with businesses that generalist providers decline. The underwriting is harder, the documentation is heavier, and the difference a careful person makes is much larger than it would be somewhere processing straightforward files at volume.
How we actually work
Nobody is handed between departments here, including internally. The person who sets an account up answers the phone when something goes wrong with it, which is a strong incentive to set it up properly.
Written communication carries most of the load. Underwriting notes, dispute evidence, integration handovers and merchant explanations are all writing, and most of this job is explaining something precise to somebody who is not a payments specialist.
What we look for
- People who read the documentation before asking
- People who would rather say "I do not know yet" than guess
- People who notice when a process is producing the same problem repeatedly, and fix the process
- People comfortable telling a merchant something they did not want to hear
Payments experience is welcome but not required. Care, clarity and follow-through are harder to teach than card-scheme rules.
What we offer
What working here comes with
-
Real ownership
You own accounts and outcomes, not a queue position. Small team, visible contribution.
-
Learning that compounds
Underwriting, scheme rules, risk and integration knowledge that transfers anywhere in the industry.
-
Sensible flexibility
Work arranged around delivering properly rather than around being visible at a desk.
-
Room to shape the role
Job descriptions here are a starting point. What you are good at tends to become what you do.
-
Direct access
No layer between you and the decisions. If something is wrong you can say so to whoever decided it.
-
Honest process
We tell candidates where they stand, including when the answer is no. Silence is not a hiring strategy.
Specific compensation, leave and benefit details are confirmed in writing during the process rather than advertised as ranges that turn out to be conditional.
